Getting where you want to be
I'm going to ask you a simple question. And I want you to answer it on the spot.
Ready?
Here we go.
If you had ten minutes to practice today, how would you spend those ten minutes?
Most people don't know an answer to this question. They don't know what they want and they don't take the time to figure it out.
There is one simple truth to this: If you don't know where you want to be there is no way to know what you need to work on in order to get there.
The difference between where you are and where you want to be is called the gap. Good dancers constantly work on closing that gap.
I recently came across a great method of identifying those gaps in your dancing…
The exercise
The method consists of four areas:
Skills (Vocabulary, Technique and execution)
Cultural understand (of the dance)
Style & Character (Your presence)
Connection (With the music and partner)
In each of these areas you identify where you are and where you want to be.
To make this easy I created a spreadsheet that you can use to write these things down and have them with you all the time.
It also contains questions to get you thinking about these different areas. And I filled out the profile for myself in case you need some examples.
